Most minor cleaning tasks can be performed at home with products you already have in your cabinets and pantry. However, more significant dirt or damage should always be addressed by a professional jeweler to best protect your valuable jewelry.

Cleaning Gold

Gold is one of the most popular metals used in jewelry today. However, regular wear and dirt accumulation can make gold appear dull and keep it from offsetting gems as it should. You can clean gold easily with a combination of mild dish soap and club soda or sodium-free seltzer water—simply place a few drops of soap into a bowl with a few cups of seltzer and let your jewelry soak for approximately five minutes. After this time is up, use a soft cleaning toothbrush to address any hard-to-reach areas, then rinse with running water and dry your jewelry with a soft cloth.

Cleaning Silver

Silver jewelry can easily develop tarnish and lose its like-new luster. Mild dish soap and warm water will often do the trick when it comes to removing tarnish—just dip a soft cloth in this mixture and rub your silver until it shines. If your silver is older or more heavily tarnished, bring out the baking soda. Mix three parts baking soda with one part clean water, then spread the paste around your silver using a soft cleaning toothbrush or cloth. Rinse your cleaned jewelry off and buff it dry to breathe new life into each piece.
